Napa Valley Gourmet :
Shackford’s Kitchen Store, Annette’s Chocolates and Genova Deli

We continue our gourmet Napa Valley adventure at Shackford’s, an old-fashioned kitchen supply store. This tiny store is packed to the gills with pots, pans, cookbooks, gadgets, molds, wooden salad bowls, ceramics and even a nice assortment of bottles and corks for homemade vinegars or infusions. Well-known chefs and middle-aged housewives alike frequent this charming holdover from Napa’s blue-collar small town past. Amazingly, they gift-wrap for free and even hand deliver in Napa city limits.

With shopping for goodies and lunch on our minds we make our way to Genova Deli. This Napa outpost of the Oakland institution is always busy, so taking a number is a must. While we wait for our number to be called, it gives us plenty of time to peruse their selection of salads and marinated vegetables. The potato salad is a favorite for its savory simplicity. Their specialty Italian sandwiches are fantastic, and filled with delectable things like proscuitto, fresh mozzarella, marinated mushrooms, coppa, mortadella or grilled vegetables. Try one on a European roll.

Genova offers ravioli from the hot case or from the freezer, where we find a selection of house made sauces, of which the richly aromatic porcini mushroom sauce deserves special attention. We also spot a small selection of the dangerously indulgent Ciao Bella gelato.

While we wait for our cappuccinos, we turn our attention their selection of pastas, cookies, olive oils, vinegars, sauces, candies, hand-painted ceramics, wine and much more. It’s so much fun we are almost able to imagine we’re in Italy.
