Want to do something unusual in Calistoga? Why not try sipping Napa Valley wine as you watch real, live bees at work on a honeycomb (don’t worry – these are behind glass so they can’t attack you). This is a highlight of Hurd Beeswax Candles and OnTheEdge, housed in the same building and owned by the same couple. This isn’t just another candle shop. Though the ubiquitous candle might seem commonplace these days, most are not authentic BEESWAX. Each season, each batch of Hurd’s beeswax emerges in its own unusual natural color. The candles are beautiful and distinct in their individuality, as well as the unique color. The vertical, Ribbon Twist candles, for example, come in a variety of hues and burn into interesting “peeling” shapes.
Since 1954, Hurd Beeswax Candles has been producing distinctive, hand crafted beeswax candles. Beginning with the original honeycomb candle, the line now ranges from such items as Bamboo Candles -- brush painted in liquid beeswax -- to Silhouettes -- each individually hand twisted to shape. Soon, candle making demonstrations will be available at Hurds.
Unlike most candles companies, Hurd Beeswax Candles does not use molds. The candles are created from sheets of pure beeswax that are either rolled or pressed to form their shapes. The pliablilty of the sheets allows a delicacy and transparency in such candles as the Silhouettes and Iris Leaves that is unobtainable in more typical, molded candles. Hurd also offers a variety of unique and artisan-created gifts, including jewelry and books.
The property also includes OnTheEdge Winery tasting room, which features wines grown in vineyards located near Calistoga. The producers are a close group of family and friends equally passionate about crafting and enjoying expressive Napa Valley wines. The name ONTHEEDGE comes from the fact that the winery’s western property line is the actual Napa-Sonoma County line. Complimentary tastes of three wines, and others for $1 per sample are available. Especially luscious are the Cabernet Sauvignons.
